Magnitude 7.3 Vanuatu
As determined by the US Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred Saturday in the Northern New Hebrides Trench between Vanuatu and New Caledonia. At this trench, the northeastern corner of the India-Australia Plate subducts beneath the Pacific Plate.Teachable Moment Presentation

Magnitude 7.4 Bonin Islands, Japan Region
As determined by the US Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), a magnitude 7.4 earthquake occurred Tuesday east of Chichi-shima, Bonin Islands, Japan. This earthquake occurred near the subduction zone where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Philippine Plate. Because the epicenter was offshore, there are currently no reports of damage or injuries.Teachable Moment Presentation
